- W4234663615 abstract "This chapter discusses several adverse effects of cardiac glycosides and drugs used in dysrhythmias. Both peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis are ineffective in removing sufficient quantities of cardiac glycosides from the body to be of use in the treatment of digoxin toxicity and the same has been shown to be true of exchange transfusion in children. Interactions of cardiac glycosides with other drugs are reviewed in the chapter. The interactions may be divided into six major categories according to the effects on—(1) absorption (principally digoxin), (2) protein binding (principally digitoxin), (3) metabolism (principally digitoxin), (4) excretion, (5) uptake of glycoside by the end-organ, and (6) response of the end-organ. The absorption of digoxin should be markedly reduced by the concurrent administration of magnesium trisilicate because the latter decreases the absorption of the former by 99.5% in an in vitro model using a physiological membrane. The usefulness of measuring serum procainamide concentrations in monitoring therapy is also reviewed in the chapter." @default.
