- W4234922014 abstract "Microalgae are a potential source for obtaining a variety of biologically active compounds, which can be more effective than traditional terrestrial plant cultures. The immense biodiversity and consequent variability in the biochemical composition of the biomass obtained from cultures of Chlorella sp., together with the use of genetic improvement and the establishment of large-scale cultivation technology, have allowed this species to be commercially used. In this way, the cultivation of this microalga has been carried out, leading to the production of biomass both for food preparation and for obtaining natural compounds with high value in the world market. Among the numerous compounds already extracted are fatty acids, carotenoids, sulfated polysaccharides, various vitamins, and other natural bioactive compounds (antioxidants, cholesterol reducers, etc.), which can be applied especially to the development of functional foods due to their nutritional and pharmaceutical properties." @default.
