- W4235066576 abstract "This part presents a brief synopsis of how physicians arrived at their understanding of atrial fibrillation (AF) mechanisms. The study of fibrillation began before the recording of electrocardiograms – and well before intracardiac electrical recordings. The part discusses drivers of AF: multi-wavelet reentry, focal rotors, and micro-reentry. Regardless of driver type, fibrillation is only present if the driver results in changing activation patterns. For multi-wavelet reentry, the driver itself has changing activation patterns, due to the nature of spatially dynamic functional circuits. In the case of focal rotors, or micro-reentry, whether people classify the rhythm as AF or atrial tachycardia depends not upon the type of driver; rather, it depends upon how waves emanating from the driver propagate: 1 : 1 equals atrial tachycardia, shifting block equals fibrillation. When conduction through the atria is not 1 : 1 it is described as fibrillatory conduction." @default.
