- W4235074449 abstract "Optical densitometers are useful tools in the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease and in cardiovascular research. Their main applications to blood flow studies using the indicator dilution technic and to blood oxygen saturation determinations are well documented. An understanding of the optical principles of densitometry provides a basis for recognizing the limitations of the use of densitometer with blood. Two general types of densitometers are currently in widespread use, the monochromatic densitometer and the dichromatic densitometer. The former is sensitive to variations in nonspecific effects like hematocrit change, while the latter compensates for these. Most densitometers used as oximeters are of the dichromatic type. The electronic circuit of a densitometer serves the primary purpose of converting its photosensitive detector output to one that is accurately proportional to the relative density of the blood or of indicator dye concentration in the blood. By using photoconductive cells in the detector system, complicated electronic circuits are eliminated. Photomultiplier tubes operating under conditions of constant anode current require more electronics but have a wider linear density range. Effective procedures using densitometers require careful calibration technics, and appropriate blood withdrawal systems and recorders." @default.
