- W4235514483 abstract "Profiles plotted from seismic data obtained from closely spaced shots in the western North Atlantic provided detailed refraction and reflection data for the areas near each receiving position. A precise relation was thus found between the deepest sub-bottom reflector and refracted arrivals from the basement. Phase reversals in the bottom reflections determined the velocity at the liquid-sediment interface, wide-angle data yielded sedimentary velocity gradients, and the depth to each major reflector down to the base of the sediments was computed. Thicknesses of the layers below the sediments were found by standard refraction techniques. Detailed analysis of the sedimentary arrivals at large D distances shows that they may be reflections; these arrivals were formerly thought to be refractions. The analysis was undertaken to account for the fact that the arrivals disappear from the records much more abruptly than can be expected from simple spreading loss of energy. Observed velocities in the sediments are plotted against vertical reflection times to the appropriate layer. It is seen that in the upper 0.5 to 1.0 km of the sedimentary column the velocity increases linearly with the reflection time. This is shown to represent a parabolic increase of velocity with depth, and it is suggested that the parabolic function is convenient for determining velocity profiles from wide-angle reflection data. It is also shown that the velocity gradient decreases to a low value at depth. The results of the refraction profiles are compared with the reflection data obtained by means of the continuous profiler technique in those regions where both methods have been applied. The two methods show excellent agreement; that is, the reflection times to various sedimentary layers and the basement are the same on both types of profile. The data reveal that the 5 ± 0.5 km/sec layer (or basement) corresponds to the deepest sub-bottom reflector. The refraction profiles have also provided enough information to enable us to determine a fairly accurate regional velocity structure within the sediments." @default.
