- W4235593093 abstract "Severity stratification of acute pancreatitis can be based on a wide array of clinical classification systems, multiparameter scores, and laboratory variables. However, only a limited number of these have passed the threshold into routine clinical application. Any approach to severity stratification carries specific advantages, but often does not cover the entire range of complications arising in the early and late phase of this disease. In the early course of acute pancreatitis, organ failure and its dynamic changes are the major determinants of severity and prognosis. Clinical multiparameter scores such as the Marshall score and sequential organ failure assessment are widely accepted tools to assess and quantify organ failure in this context. Among the laboratory variables, hematocrit and blood urea nitrogen are generally available estimates, whereas C-reactive protein is the most accurate variable to determine early severity. Abdominal compartment syndrome has emerged as an important factor with respect to both prognosis and therapy. For monitoring the course of acute pancreatitis, dynamic multiparameter scores are useful tools. Of the laboratory markers, procalcitonin is a reliable means to predict septic complications and overall prognosis." @default.
