Although numerous instances require valuation for insurance purposes, this chapter focuses on the three main reasons: (1) To fund buy/sell agreements (2) To determine the proper amount of key person insurance and (3) To value a claim in business interruption cases. Planning for the continuity of the enterprise is a critical task for every owner manager. Buy/sell agreements are one tool used to achieve this goal. This chapter explores the primary purpose of these agreements. The valuation process is a key element in the buy/sell agreement. The chapter also explains in depth the three methods that most price-setting mechanics in these agreements employ: (1) Negotiation between the parties.
