- W4236059196 abstract "All surgery carries with it the risk of complications. It is said that a surgeon who has no complications does not operate. In recent years, there have been significant advances in foot and ankle surgery. Patients with serious fractures, including those of the calcaneus and deformities resulting from diabetes mellitus, now are routinely treated successfully with reconstructive procedures. Fundamental changes in the approach to the geriatric patient population with foot and ankle disease have resulted in restoring and maintaining the active lifestyle seniors now enjoy. Complex deformity such as posterior tibialis tendon dysfunction now is corrected through various procedures. With the increase of new and innovative techniques has come an inevitable proliferation of complications. To address these conditions effectively, it is necessary to access not only surgeondependent variables such as errors in technique, diagnosis, and judgement, but other variables including patient lifestyle, nutritional status, associated medical problems, severity of the injury, compliance, and expectations. The key to reducing the rate of occurrence and severity of these unfortunate experiences is adequate preoperative planning, judgement, careful technique, and adequate followup. We think there is a need for a compendium that effectively deals with this important topic. Presented here is a series of articles based on the experience of foot and ankle experts from various academic and clinical centers. The authors describe common pitfalls after surgery giving special attention to prevention, recognition, and treatment of the problems. This symposium addresses the complications of and salvage procedures for traumatic injuries, arthrodesis, tendon and ligamentous problems, and neuropathic and arthritic conditions. Complications from newer surgical techniques such as total ankle replacement, arthroscopy, and small wire fixators in the lower extremity also are discussed. A special thanks to the contributors for sharing their knowledge, wisdom, and dedication in providing a state-of-the-art review on their subject. It is our hope that this symposium will identify and clarify potential foot and ankle complications and also provide a treatment guide for orthopaedic surgeons confronted with these difficult problems. Ultimately, the difference between a patient who is crippled after surgery and a satisfied patient is judgement in preoperative planning, meticulous attention to detail, a thorough postoperative treatment regimen, and a clear understanding of the patient’s expectations. This series of articles is intended to provide the orthopaedic surgeon with knowledge concerning some of the common complications seen in the practice of foot and ankle surgery. There are many other problems not included that also are encountered. No judgment is made or implied concerning the standard of care, surgeon education, or quality of surgical technique. The purpose of these reports is to provide the surgeon with information so that he or she can act accordingly when such problems occur." @default.
