- W42360777 abstract "The present Lebanese crisis is largely attributable to the heterogeneous character of the country's three million population, which embraces six major and nearly 12 minor sects, each of which possesses a feeling of social and cultural distinctiveness. The Arabic language, the native tongue of an overwhelming majority and the over all unity of the economic life of the Lebanese people as well as the common sense of belonging to the Arab world are factors that have held the country together so far, but the divisive pulls, though often latent in the past, have a logic of their own. The Middle east crisis, with its offshoot of a sizeable Palestinian presence in the Lebanon and frequent Israeli military forays into the country, has played a major catalytic role in giving a sharp edge to internal differences and causing the country to collapse into chaos. The way in which the Lebanon has responded to the Middle East crisis shows the weakness of the forces of cohesion. A more homogeneous community would in all likelihood have shown a strong sense of common purpose in the face of the crisis. The strength the divisive forces have shown can be said to have its roots in historical developments dating back to the end of World War I and the dismemberment of the Ottoman Empire. In 1861 the Mediterranean coastal area lying to the South of Asia Minor was divided under the then Ottoman administration in the following manner: the Vilayet of Alleppo, based on the northern Syrian city of that name, the Vilayet of Syria (el Sham); the coastal Vilayet of Beirut, and two smaller units, the Sanjak of Lebanon and the Sanjak of Jerusalem. On 1 September 1920, General Bouraud, the French High Commissioner divided the mandate for Syria and Lebanon, as a result of which the city of Beirut, the coastal regions to the north and south including Tripoli, Sidon and Tyre, the Biqa valley, and Baalbek were added to the Sanjak of Lebanon to form a new greater Lebanon. Since 1961, the Sanjak of Lebanon had had an autonomous political existence under an elected central administrative assembly composed of seven Christians (four Maronites, two orthodox Christians and one Melchite)," @default.
