- W4236202734 abstract "This chapter discusses Poeciliidae family of fish, focusing on the Gambusia type, which is a small fish having accentuated sexual dimorphism: females significantly larger than males. The fish is originally from America. One species, at least, has been introduced in the lagoons and estuaries of part of the Mediterranean. Gambusia holbrooki individuals introduced to Europe have often been considered to belong to the species Gambusia affinis. The general body color of G. holbrooki is grayish, sometimes greenish; scales more or less outlined by a stroke of brown or a darker gray. Males are smaller than females and are also distinguished by the presence of a gonopod. The fish is present in calm fresh and brackish waters rich in vegetation, even those which are little-oxygenated. Mosquitofish are carnivorous fish whose feeding activity is diurnal. The young of both sexes are more generalist; they consume a lot of detritus, cladocerans and rotifers." @default.
