- W4236489374 abstract "Objective: To examine associations between non-residential fatherhood and academic engagement among Curaçaoan and Dutch adolescents and young adults. Background: Growing up with a non-resident biological father in the home might be detrimental for offspring academic development, at least in Western societies where this family structure is still somewhat stigmatized and social networks that replace non-resident fathers are often less dense. On the Caribbean Island of Curaçao, however, many children grow up without their biological fathers and single mothers are often supported by extended families. Unfortunately, it is unknown whether students’ academic engagement is affected by non-residence of their biological fathers and whether differences between countries exist in this regard. Method: 528 Curaçaoan and 636 Dutch young people completed a digital questionnaire on household compositions and school-related behavioral and emotional (dis)engagement in a classroom setting. Because of measurement variance, we estimated structural equation models of academic engagement dimensions separately for Curaçaoan and Dutch participants. Results: Non-residential fatherhood was not associated with academic engagement among Curaçaoan and Dutch participants. Additional analyses, however, showed that non-residence of the biological father was negatively linked to Curaçaoan participants’ educational level. Conclusion: Associations between non-residential fatherhood and offspring academic development might be more subtle and less systematic than existing literature suggests. Implications: Such findings hopefully motivate professionals such as teachers and social workers to not unduly and universally problematize the experience of non-residential fatherhood. Instead, young people’s SES, household composition, and the relationship between their biological parents seem to be more important for their academic development." @default.
