- W4236646723 abstract "PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 12 months of moderate intensity training on the proliferation of T helper lymphocytes (CD4+) in males and females aged 65 to 75 years. METHODS Subjects underwent a Pre and Post-study incremental exercise test. Every 4 weeks for 12 months, a resting blood sample was taken from subjects in trained (TR) and untrained (UT) groups. Haematology was analysed with a full blood count (leukocyte, erythrocyte and platelet concentration; hematocrit; haemoglobin and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration). CD4+ lymphocytes were separated and analysed for changes in the expression of Interleukin 2 receptors (IL-2R) CD25 and transferrin receptors (TfR) CD71 by flow cytometry. RESULTS The percentage of lymphocytes positive for CD25 significantly increased in older males with training, but not in older females (p<0.05). The density of CD25 did not increase in male or female groups after 12 months of training. Moderate intensity training had no significant effect on CD71 expression in male or female groups. Immunological variables showed significant month-to-month changes over 12 months, with decreases in CD4+/CD25+ expression during southern hemisphere autumn, late winter and late spring, and increases in summer, early winter and early spring. CD71 expression showed an inverse relationship with CD25 expression in males during the 12 months, but not females. CONCLUSIONS The UT and TR groups showed similar seasonal variations in haematological and immunological indices, suggesting that autumn, late winter and late spring were periods of reduced immuno-competency. Summer appeared to be a period of CD4+ proliferation for both TR and UT groups." @default.
