- W4237055276 abstract "In 1831, reviewing Tennyson's Poems, Chiefly Lyrical in The Englishman's Magazine , Arthur Henry Hallam looked to the previous generation to signal the decisive break between Romanticism and his friend's new poetry. For Hallam, innovation in poetry and controversy in poetry reviews were inseparable. ‘When Mr. Wordsworth […] asserted that immediate or rapid popularity was not the test of poetry,’ he wrote, ‘great was the consternation and clamour among those farmers of public favour, the established critics.’ When Wordsworth urged his reader in the ‘Preface to Lyrical Ballads’ (1800) to judge the poems ‘by his own feelings genuinely, and not by reflection upon what will probably be the judgement of others’; or when he claimed in the ‘Essay, Supplementary to the Preface’ (1815) that great poetry was seldom immediately popular, because every great author had ‘the task of creating the taste by which he is to be enjoyed’, Hallam understood him to be assailing the reviewers directly. ‘Never had so audacious an attack been made upon their undoubted privileges and hereditary charter of oppression’, he asserted. For Hallam, some of Romanticism's founding tenets were formulated in antagonistic dialogue with the poetry reviews. The full range, richness, and significance of that dialogue are obscured if contemporary periodical writings, particularly reviews, are ignored. Lyrical Ballads , for example, drew on poetry published in magazines (as Robert Mayo (1954) has shown), engaged the critical assumptions of reviewers (as Hallam suggests), and was extensively reviewed: the first edition at least 14 times and the second edition at least eight times." @default.
