- W4237187890 abstract "The prevalence of overweight and obese individuals is significantly increasing in the United States. Large population-based studies have shown that obesity and weight gain have increased risk of kidney stone formation caused by alterations of urinary metabolite excretion in adults. Regarding the negative effects of comorbid disease and urolithiasis on kidney function together with the limitations of stone surgery, the medical management of stone disease seems to be the most important goal for preventing further recurrences in morbidly obese patients. It must be borne in mind that weight-loss diets and bariatric surgery may cause increased risk of stone disease by low pH and hyperuricosuria. Obesity poses a number of problems in the management of stone disease from diagnosis and imaging through to anesthesia and surgery. Some technical modifications have been defined for increasing success rates in extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy and percutaneous nephrolithotomy. The urologist treating obese patients should have enough knowledge and experience of the potential diagnostic and treatment problems as well as the necessary modifications of the techniques." @default.
