- W4237232502 abstract "AbstractTheocritus’ Idylls 16 for Hiero II of Syracuse and 17 for Ptolemy I, as well as sections of his other poems, are among our amplest specimens of the encomia of Hellenistic rulers that were available to Latin poets as models for their own negotiations of political changes in the late Republic and under the Principate. This paper begins with Horace’s closest imitation (and emulation) of Theocritus as a center from which to explore other Augustan imitations of and parallels to Theocritean encomium and locate them within the Roman poets’ broader adaptation of Hellenistic monarchical discourse. Particular topics include royal apotheosis, the ruler’s protection of the land and its bounty, the legitimizing force of a divine pantheon associated with the rulers, and the varying degrees of Alexandrianism attested by these Roman imitations, ranging from an at least nominally Republican adaptation of monarchical discourse to an embrace of a Ptolemaic-style divine kingship." @default.
