- W4237235347 abstract "This chapter focuses on neural mechanisms, which enable a mammal to know where a sound is coming from. It first deals with spectral cues in the survey of mammalian auditory mechanisms. Auditory afferents from the mammalian ear project to the cochlear nucleus (CN) in the brainstem, just like they do in birds. The chapter shows that there are neural mechanisms for extracting the vertical sound origin from spectral cues, and the horizontal origin from a combination of spectral cues, interaural intensity difference (IID) and interaural time difference (ITD) information. Mammals use differences in the ITD and IID between the two ears for horizontal localisation, while spectral cues are used for vertical localisation. They extract ITD information from low-frequency sounds using coincidence detection in the MSO, but it is not entirely clear whether this works through a Jeffress-type mechanism of line labelling or a two-channel mass action process." @default.
