- W4237433211 abstract "All living plants and animals face an eventual fate—death. The processes that act upon an organism after death can either lead to decomposition and recycling of nutrients held within hard tissues (i.e., bones) and soft tissues into the ecosystem or, under favorable conditions, can lead to preservation over time. The processes that lead to preservation of plant and animal remains as body or trace fossils are broadly described as “fossilization.” An animal's hard parts or bones and teeth contain mineral (hydroxylapatite or bioapatite) and organic (collagen) components, and are more likely to be preserved than soft tissues. Post-mortem, hard tissues interact with the surrounding environment. The exact timing of interactions is not well understood and likely varies in different depositional environments. Biological and nonbiological processes act upon the mineral and organic phases, leading to the degradation of organics, opening pore spaces to the movement of aqueous solutions and microbial communities. When the mineral phase of bone interacts with fluids and microorganisms, there are two potential outcomes: degradation or preservation as a new mineral phase. While there are still many unknowns surrounding these interactions, this article will focus on our current understanding of the processes that impact vertebrate hard parts (i.e., bones and teeth) as well as shells and plant material, and facilitate their persistence over geologic time as fossils." @default.
