- W4237438522 abstract "There are two kinds of organic membranes used for ultrafiltration (UF): polymers and inorganic membranes using inorganic materials represented by ceramics. UF processes can be operated in various different modes depending on the requirements of the process. The more commonly used modes are batch concentration, multistage continuous concentration, batch diafiltration, continuous diafiltration and feed and bleed type operation. The retention characteristics of UF membranes are delineated through comparison of the combined viscous flow and frictional model with the Ferry-Faxen equation. The molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) concept is discussed by using calculations of how sharp cut-off curves one can expect of UF membranes with uniform pore sizes and how heteroporosity will affect such curves. UF membranes are characterized by their MWCO. UF excels at the clarification of solutions containing suspended solids, bacteria and high concentrations of macromolecules, such as electrocoat paints, pharmaceuticals, poly(vinyl alcohol) and indigo, potable water and tertiary wastewater." @default.
