- W4237637364 abstract "PURPOSE Muscular deficits, muscular contractions and reduction of movements are common in scoliosis in adolescents. Physical therapy usually leads to compensation for the deficits. We investigated the effects of indoor climbing on parameters of spine muscle strength and move-ment. METHODS A group of 19 adolescents, 6 male and 13 female, aged 11 to 18 years, with a scoliosis angle of 11 ° to 110° and partly wearing back braces agreed to participate in an in-door climbing course for 1.5 hours twice a week for 12 weeks. The control group comprised 6 female persons with a scoliosis angle of 22 to 36°. Prior and post training, the maximum isometric strength was measured for the cervical extensors, cervical lateral flexors as well as for lumbar/thoracic extensors, flexors, rotators and lateral flexors. Mobility was measured for the same movements. RESULTS The gain in muscle strength for cervical extensors was 11%, in lateral flexors right 15% and left 13%. The gain was 12% for the lumbar/thoracic extensors, 7.7% for the flexors, 11 % for the right rotators, 20% for the left rotators, 18% for the right lateral flexors and 20% for the left lateral flexors. Cervical mobility in sagital extensors in-creased by 13%, in sagital flexors 11 %, right frontal plain by 14% and left by 14%, right transversal plain by 21 % and left by 15%. Sagittal mobility in extensors increased by 11% and in flexors by 4.0%. The strongest increase was seen for the right frontal plain by 27% and left by 25%, as well as 24% and 27% for the transversal plain. The control group had a gain in cervical strength by 1.1 %, for the right flexors by 0.54%, for the left by 6.0% and for the lum-bar/thoracic extensors by 14%, for the flexors by 3.3%, for the right rotators 1.9% and left 3.0%, for the right lateral flexors by 4.3% and left by 4.3%. Sagittal mobility in extension in-creased by 4.5% and in flexion by 0.8%, the right transversal plain by 1.6% and left by 0.7%, whereas a reduction was observed in the left frontal plain by 3.1% and left by 7.9%. The right transversal was measured again with an increase of 11 % and 12% on the left, and the right frontal plain increased by 5.5% and left by 6.9%. CONCLUSIONS Climbing leads to a significant gain in strength in para vertebral muscles and mobility in adolescent patients with scoliosis." @default.
