- W4237840636 abstract "The LPA model predicts a specific sequence of bifurcations in dynamic behavior as the adult death rate of the beetles is changed from its value estimated. This bifurcation sequence does not involve chaos. It does provide an excellent experimental opportunity to document the occurrence of model predicted bifurcations in the dynamics of a real biological population. One of the best reasons for building explicit demographic models is that they can help to predict when subtle changes in the environment might provide profound changes in population dynamics. The dynamic bifurcations predicted by the LPA model are not intuitive consequences of an increased adult death rate. They are highly nonlinear phenomena. This chapter provides a bifurcation sequence predicted by the deterministic LPA model as the adult death rate is varied. This sequence includes two bifurcations: a period-doubling bifurcation and a reverse period-doubling bifurcation. These transitions in dynamics motivate the implementation of the experiments that are designed to document their occurrence in laboratory cultures of flour beetles. The success of the bifurcation experiment—documenting model predicted dynamic changes by means of controlled and replicated laboratory experiments—gives one the confidence to investigate other, more complicated model-predicted bifurcation sequences, including sequences involving chaotic attractors." @default.
