GIS application of water resources for surface water hydrology is based on three basic concepts: water flows downhill, downhill flowpaths of rainwater on the land surface can be modeled and predicted from elevation data, and landscape can be studied to understand rainfall-runoff-infiltration dynamics based on the terrain and watershed characteristics. The chapter further discusses the advantages and disadvantages of raster versus vector data in the context of watershed delineation as well as critical issues associated with resolution of DEMs and algorithms used to delineate watersheds." @default.
