- W4238327424 abstract "Today our knowledge of memory is a bit like a road atlas with a lot of the pages missing. It may give a good description of Devon, say, or the Lake District, but is little help on how to get from one to the other. We know quite a lot about the individual sorts of memory that I’ll be describing, but the overall picture, especially of how one type relates to another, is hazy at best. What we ordinarily call memory, psychologists term declarative memory. It is the faculty that enables people to say ‘I went to the supermarket yesterday and bought some pizzas and ice-cream’. Important, but mostly unanswered, questions about declarative memory centre on how it is recorded, what form the record takes and how it is recalled. Another form of long-term memory is usually called learning or procedural memory. Once you have learned to ride a bicycle, for example, you may not be able consciously to recall the details of how to do it, or even remember much about your practice sessions. Nevertheless, you don’t forget how to ride. In addition to these two long-term forms, there is a range of short and very short-term memories." @default.
