- W4238482898 abstract "This chapter concentrates on the anatomy and physiology of the kidneys, reasons why they are susceptible to damage, and provides examples of common urogenital emergencies seen in veterinary emergency medicine and critical care settings. It discusses nursing strategies for renal patients. Urine production relies on two factors: proper function of the nephron and blood supply to the glomerulus. The chapter summarizes the cause and effect of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) in veterinary emergency. Azotemia is recognized by an abnormal concentration of urea nitrogen and creatinine in the blood. Azotemia, and consequently acute kidney injury (AKI), are categorized as prerenal, intrinsic renal, or postrenal in origin. Traditional therapy for dogs and cats with AKI is largely supportive. It involves fluid therapy to ensure euhydration and euvolemia but does not seek overhydration. Advanced therapy like continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) is being used more commonly at veterinary specialty centers." @default.
