- W4238526683 abstract "There has been considerable progress in cancer research in the area of chemical carcinogenesis, the subject of the latest issue of the British Medical Bulletin. There is wide agreement at this time that exogenous factors play an essential role in the induction of most human cancers. The scientific basis for this is explained in detail in the present volume of the Bulletin. It is shown how a great variety of chemical carcinogens may be metabolized to products which react covalently with DNA. 06-alkylation of guanine can lead to base mispairing and possible mutation, strengthening the concept that cancer is initiated by somatic mutation, with other factors such as misrepair of alkylated DNA and possible deletion of genetic material also playing a part. This knowledge of the 1st step in cancer induction has resulted in various rapid tests for detecting potential carcinogens. As cancer is a multistage process, other events must follow before a malignant tumor results. Research in this area is already achieving results, with models to study multistage carcinogenesis, carcinogenic synergism and antagonism, and the changes that occur in cells in vivo and in vitro in the latent period between exposure to the carcinogen and the appearance of obvious malignant changes. Problems have been created by this fast moving research, in that many important chemicals are now suspected carcinogens." @default.
