- W4238543560 abstract "In this paper I argue that the modernist obsession with ‘making it new’ harbours a fundamentally ethical impulse to critique the status quo and a commitment to remaking the future in a qualitatively different form. Borrowing from Horkheimer and Adorno’s work on novelty in Dialectic of Enlightenment, I argue that the modernist passion for the new is crucially different from the illusion of variety generated by capitalist over-production of commodities. Turning to E. M. Forster, I suggest that ethics enters into the discussion where modernist critique shies away from prescribing the precise nature of the future. Instead, it creates the conditions of possibility for a future that is perpetually deferred—a future-to-come (avenir à venir)—and that is perpetually open not only to specific alterities, but to alterity itself." @default.
