- W4238756835 abstract "Mathematical models of ruminant nutrition have been in use for over seven decades as knowledge discovery and diet formulation aids. Models vary in complexity according to their objectives. Scientific models are usually developed based on physiologic or metabolic processes at the tissue or cellular level, and strictly follow base balance principles. They range in scope from small models of an individual process within a cell to representations of tissue and whole animal function. The latter models are often aggregations of models of subcellular processes in the case of tissue, and of tissues in the case of whole animal models. Research models that represent cellular mechanisms have been widely used to aid in the interpretation of isotopic data serving to extend the knowledge derived from those experiments. Production models are generally more aggregated and empirical in nature representing the major driving factors mostly at the animal level, although representations of some subprocesses have been included in recent efforts. The data used to derive the equations are generally collected from animals in mass balance. These latter models are valid only within the domain of the data used in their development and should not be used to extrapolate beyond that. They have been incorporated into a range of software programs that utilize the model in concert with feed libraries and optimization algorithms as tools to support ration formulation and whole-farm nutrient management. Research models are allowing us to explicitly include genetic information from genomic and transcriptomic work into nutrition models; in addition, these models are being expanded to consider the role of nutrition in reproduction and disease (Huber et al., 2014) in pasture systems (Gregorini et al., 2013; McNamara et al., 2016b) and in the broad field of systems biology (McNamara et al., 2016c)." @default.
