- W4238963174 abstract "Scholars have long posited that one legacy of World War I was the emancipation of women. Some have gone so far as to credit the war with providing the tipping point for women's suffrage in the United States, one historian calling their volunteer efforts “indispensable to suffrage victory.” This chapter suggests that men did not grant women the vote because of their war service but because fighting for their cause during wartime had made them better politicians. Promoting an unpopular cause at a time of flag-waving jingoism was a challenge for both moderates and militants within the movement, one that hardened them as political actors. That they later parlayed this knowledge into pressuring lawmakers and collecting chits was key to their victory. In the meantime, moderates and militants within the movement vied for power and public attention. Their dueling strategies and personal animus divided opinion among activists across the country." @default.
