- W4239358051 abstract "The physical components most directly involved with mobility issues in the geriatric patient include the skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems. Difficulties in maintaining normal or previous levels of movement are often the first indicators of aging. Patients with arthritis can have decreased mobility, a decreased range of motion, muscle atrophy, reduced activity, and increased stiffness and pain, which can, in turn, lead to more decreased mobility, more muscle loss, worsened pain, and diminished flexibility. In both feline and canine patients, the goals of treating the arthritis are to decrease pain, preserve range of motion, and to maintain function and quality of life. In veterinary medicine, cryotherapy is primarily used locally. It temporarily increases connective tissue stiffness and decreases tensile strength; it also increases muscle viscosity temporarily, which decreases rapid movement performance. Local application of heat decreases blood pressure, muscle spasm, and pain." @default.
