- W4239957012 abstract "This chapter discusses high coherence between limbic theta rhythm and sniffing in the hamster. It presents an extended analysis of tape-recorded data previously described by Macrides (1975) that demonstrated that golden hamsters exhibit nonrandom temporal relationships between exploratory sniffing and limbic theta. In the analysis, wave analysis techniques based on the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) was employed to further characterize the temporal relationships between these two rhythms during investigation of purified odorants and natural hamster scents. Sniffing was measured as a voltage oscillation across a thermocouple inserted into the nasal cavity through the nasal bone and limbic theta was measured as a voltage oscillation across a bipolar electrode in the dorsal hippocampus. FFTs were performed on sequential one-second samples of the simultaneously recorded theta and sniffing waveforms. Two major conclusions were drawn from the analysis: (1) the sniffing rhythm tends to be entrained to the ongoing theta rhythm; and (2) across frequencies, the measured onsets of sniffs tend to bear a constant latency relationship with a particular phase of theta during periods of entrainment." @default.
