- W4240486370 abstract "Fluid resuscitation is a mainstay for the management of critically ill patients. A major dilemma facing medical professionals regarding fluid therapy is the choice between crystalloid and colloid solutions. In horses, hydroxyethyl starches and fresh frozen plasma are most commonly used for resuscitation and/or correction of hypoproteinemia. Hemoglobin-based oxygen-carrying solutions (HBOCs) were developed to provide an alternative to whole blood transfusions. HBOCs have oxygen-carrying properties, are excellent colloids, and decrease blood viscosity. A decrease in colloid osmotic pressure (COP) is one of the clinical effects associated with the administration of large volumes of intravenous crystalloids to horses. The administration or coadministration of synthetic colloids to critically ill patients that are hypoalbuminemic may be more effective in restoring and maintaining plasma volume and COP. Synthetic colloids may reduce the risks of volume overload and edema formation that large volumes of plasma administration could potentially produce." @default.
