- W4240883863 abstract "This chapter discusses a complex phenomena, epilepsy. The physiological events of epilepsy can be arbitrarily divided into an inquiry regarding (1) the abnormalities that generate the discharge at the epileptogenic focus, (2) the local spread or the changes occurring that precipitate the interictal activity into a seizure, and (3) the propagation of the discharges during a major seizure. The elemental problem in epilepsy deals with the determination of the locus or loci of origin of the seizure discharge. It has been shown that the local application of alumina cream to the cortex of animals results in the development of an epileptogenic focus that behaves much the same as epileptic foci in man. Much of the insight into human epilepsy is a consequence of the data obtained by electroencephalography. It should also be apparent that insight into a phenomenon such as epilepsy requires a complete and intimate knowledge of normal cortical physiology. At present, neither the function of the individual cortical elements nor their intimate morphological interrelationships are well understood. Thus, it is satisfied with relatively crude models of a pathological process such as epilepsy-models that are more precise with increasing information. Thus, the fascination of epilepsy is the search for a complete knowledge of the functioning of the brain-the organ of the mind and the most complex communication network ever to be devised." @default.
