His handyman instincts really began to pay off when money was tight and appliances were cranky—Philo became the family go-to guy for repairs. But his real obsession, as Krull explores in this picture-book biography, was the promise of transmitting images over airwaves, which, with the encouragement of a high-school teacher and the help of a couple of foresighted investors, he accomplished in 1927 at the ripe old age of twenty-one. So how come he's not as well known as an Edison or a Bell? For that information, readers must exit the triumphant conclusion of the main text and enter the fine print of the author's note, which explains [End Page 115] Farnsworth's ongoing patent battle with the behemoth RCA and his lifelong embittered relationship with his creation. It's a story at least as compelling as the main event, and so kids and adult readers will want to make sure they peruse the end matter as well as the main text. Krull's vivid storytelling and Couch's luminescent mixed-media paintings, lit in appropriate celebration of Farnsworth's delight in all things electrical and gently hazed apropos the nascent medium's legendarily poor reception, should leave the audience eager for further information, to which they're directed on a page of print and internet sources.
