- W4241612531 abstract "This chapter discusses the causes and diagnosis of vertigo. The term vertigo implies by derivation a subjective sense of rotation, either of one's self or of the surroundings, but it is helpful to include within the term simply a feeling of being off balance, without any sense of rotation, which some patients with Meniere's disease experience between the more usual spinning attacks. Likewise, the sensation that some people experience when looking down from a height or in the presence of diplopia might also be described as vertigo. It can then be concluded that vertigo, as more broadly defined, must always mean some involvement of the vestibular apparatus, either in its peripheral pathways or central connexions. Vertigo because of affections of the external auditory meatus must be very rare, if indeed it occurs at all, but removal of wax is said to have cured vertigo on occasion. Disease of the middle ear and blockage of the Eustachian tubes by catarrh or new growth may be accompanied by vertigo, but probably the labyrinth is affected too in all such cases. Thus, otitis media can cause either a serous or a purulent labyrinthitis, and otosclerosis may spread to involve the inner ear." @default.
