On the part of the Palestinians, the conflict was initially waged with the means of civil disobedience, and it was only gradually that the leaflets of the UNC issued a summons to employ violence. The biblical paradigm of violence is put into practice only when it was necessary to defend the obligatory character of the community's values against external enemies. Hamas' relationship to the state of Israel is less unambiguous than the idealization of vengeance and violence on the leaflets might suggest. It is worthwhile to study in more detail the religious ethics under the 'conditions of the world which are remote from brotherliness'. The suicide attack becomes a means to liberate oneself voluntarily from the entanglements in a culture by which the perpetrator is fascinated and repelled in equal measure.
