- W4241685691 abstract "Abstract This introductory chapter outlines the diverse ways that madness figures in literary texts of the 12th to 15th centuries, primarily French and Anglo-Norman, with emphasis on romance and hagiography. While the legal, social, and medical contexts for these texts will sometimes be considered, the emphasis of the study is on literary depictions. The approach draws on psychoanalytic and queer theory, as formulated by Jacques Lacan, Judith Butler, and Slavoj Žižek. The work of these modern theorists provides a useful conceptual framework for discussing problems of identity, normality, and deviance, and the role therein of desire and loss, in medieval texts. The study also seeks to refine Foucault’s brief comments about madness in medieval society." @default.
