However, this pacific cosmopolitanism gave way to a more militant kind — the Terror of 1793–1794 — which entailed the suspension of civil liberties and, above all, the arrest of enemy subjects and the seizure of their property. As revolutionary ideology lost its cosmopolitanism and focused on the defence of the nation itself, so an exclusive, chauvinistic form of nationalism was born. This book investigates the complexity of France's attitudes towards foreigners. It deals with issues such as citizenship, nationality, passports, and surveillance, and looks at the experience of specific types of foreigners. The dramatic turnaround in the fortunes of foreigners during the Revolution offers important insights into the origins of modern concepts of nationality and citizenship and the development of national identities." @default.
