- W4242000249 abstract "We have read the article by Nagamatsu et al. referring to the impact of hydrostatic pressure on fractional flow reserve [[1]Nagamatsu S. Sakamoto K. Yamashita T. Sato R. Tabata N. Motozato K. et al.Impact of hydrostatic pressure on fractional flow reserve: in vivo experimental study of anatomical height difference of coronary arteries.J Cardiol. 2020; (Feb 20. pii: S0914-5087(20)30028-30029. doi: 10.1016/j.jjcc.2020.01.009. [Epub ahead of print])Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (5) Google Scholar]. The authors' findings are in agreement with those of Canning et al. [[2]Canning C.R. Restori M. Doppler ultrasound studies of the ophthalmic artery.Eye. 1988; 2: 92-95Crossref PubMed Scopus (48) Google Scholar], observing that erect position produces a 22 mmHg drop in ophthalmic artery pressure in relation to measurements in the supine position (−0.73 mmHg/cm). However, it would be interesting to note that the effect is not the same throughout the cardiac cycle or in all vascular territories. We have observed that diastolic flow in brachial artery becomes retrograde if the arm is raised (but remains anterograde during systolic phase) [[3]Mc Loughlin M.J. Mc Loughlin S. Milei J. Diastolic retrograde arterial flow: preliminary report.Radiology. 2012; 54: 246-250Google Scholar] and also that muscle contraction produces retrograde diastolic flow by increased vascular impedance due to extrinsic arteriolar compression [[4]Mc Loughlin S. Mc Loughlin M.J. Azzato F. Milei J. Retrograde flow components in the brachial artery. A new hemodynamic index.Eur J Appl Physiol. 2012; 112: 3577-3583Crossref PubMed Scopus (4) Google Scholar]. On the other hand, this phenomenon does not occur in the internal carotid artery, where the upright position does not seem to produce hemodynamic changes (perhaps because cranial circulation seems to behave like a closed hemodynamic system). As the coronary circulation is affected by muscle contraction with increased impedance during systole and increased diastolic compliance of the arterial bed, it would be interesting to know the moment of the cardiac cycle in which these effects were noted." @default.
