This paper presents the overall strategy deployed by the POSEIDON partners from the beginning of the Project, and its evolution in the light of the demands of a changing subsea market.IntroductionJanuary 1984, two Oil Companies, the French TOTAL CFP and the Norwegian STATOIL, and a Research Institute, the Institut Frangais du Petrole, together launched the POSEIDON Project, a Petrole, together launched the POSEIDON Project, a Research and Development Project prefiguring what is considered today as one of the most promising perspectives for offshore resources promising perspectives for offshore resources development: the subsea multiphase boosting and transportation concept. Among the means available to Operators for improving offshore development economics, subsea production techniques have already proved to be an effective solution, but unfortunately proved to be an effective solution, but unfortunately have limitations: - the distance covered by effluents under naturalfield pressure has to be limited to avoid jeopardizing overall recovery, - multiphase flow problems, well-mastered forshort distances, prove much more difficult when increasing the length of the line. Therefore, one can imagine the vast potential of these techniques with the mastery of the above problems. In fact, TOTAL and the IFP had already conducted a joint pre-project called 'Production without process on site', in 1983; the aim was to appraise process on site', in 1983; the aim was to appraise the potential of such a scheme, list the problems involved and identify the main areas of R and D. Only problems related to hardware, well within the actual problems related to hardware, well within the actual skills of the two partners, were addressed, with particular focus on multiphase boosting, subsea driver and subsea station architecture. On the basis of these earlier conceptual studies, the POSEIDON Project was launched with STATOIL. widening the scope to include multiphase transportation, thanks to the STATOIL know-how in this domain. Today. after nearly 7 years of studies and experiments, numerous innovative production techniques and tools are emerging: first applications of certain components and of the full concept are already being considered.THE R and D PROGRAMMEOriginal scope of studiesConsidering an offshore field development and given the oil prices and tax regimes. two main parameters govern the economics: - the reservoir quality (nature and volume of reserves, wells productivity), - its location.P. 19 Keywords: installation, north sea, total technical cost, multiphase scheme, upstream oil & gas, subsea system, sea depth, multiphase pump, subsea production equipment, application Subjects: Artificial Lift Systems, Offshore Facilities and Subsea Systems, Hydraulic and jet pumps, Subsea production equipment This content is only available via PDF. 1990.
