- W4242079433 abstract "A key motivation for the study of past climates comes from the fact that modern instrumental records are limited in length and hence cannot capture the full range of natural variability in the climate system. As paleoclimatology has matured as a discipline, it has provided critical insights into the nature of past climate change over a broad range of timescales. A wealth of paleoclimate information is preserved in a diverse suite of natural archives that include tree rings, ice sheets, cave deposits, and rocks and sediments that have formed in both marine and terrestrial settings. To use these archives, one must learn to extract information on past climate conditions from the physical, chemical, and biological components preserved in the geologic record. Such information comes almost entirely from indirect measures, known as proxies , that can be calibrated in some way to key climate variables. This review focuses on some of the most widely applied geochemical proxies in use today, with an emphasis on those that have relevance to tracing climate and ocean history from marine sediment sequences." @default.
