- W4242096412 abstract "This chapter presents morphological characteristics of wood, wood bark and twigs, tree and shrub leaves, conifer needles, grasses, seeds, roots and mosses. Plant anatomy reference works aid in the identification of organic remains. The presented organic remains originate mainly from central European neolithic lakeside settlements preserved under waterlogged conditions. The xylem and the bark have a good preservation potential, and conifer wood containing resin is generally better preserved than wood of deciduous trees. Wood in thin sections is yellowish to brown in colour. The cellulose of the cell walls may exhibit interference colours. Leaves of deciduous trees and shrubs consist mainly of thin-walled parenchymatous cells and show a distinct internal structure. Blocks of dried peat were used as construction materials for turf houses. Lastly, seeds and fruit remains are observed in the context of agriculture, food gathering and food-preparation activities. The identification of roots also plays an important role in the reconstruction of soil processes." @default.
