• W4242195424 abstract "Climate change mitigation and reducing of carbon footprint in recent years have focused on ways to achieve less emission of greenhouse gases (GHG’s) due to plastic production and plastic incineration. This has led to the production of bio-polymers to replace the conventional petroleum based polymers which are used as commodity plastics. Thus the use of synthesis of polymers from renewable feedstocks has been explored considerably. Among the biopolymers present, poly lactic acid (PLA) possesses properties which can be applied in manufacturing various value added products. PLA is a hydroxyacid derived polymer having the monomer lactic acid (2-hydroxy propionic acid) which exists in optically active l- or d-enantiomers. PLA can be produced by carbohydrate fermentation or by chemical synthesis. At present the majority of lactic acid production is done by the fermentation route which then undergoes condensation polymerization, azeotropic dehydrative polymerization and/or polymerization through lactide formation. PLA is a biodegradable and biocompatible polymer having great application in various industries especially in packaging and biomedical materials. Poly-lactic acid (PLA) has also been used to develop PLA blends and also composites reinforced with natural fibers and various fillers.
