- W4242200129 abstract "The term “friendship” in primatology originally denoted the cohesive social relationship between a lactating female and adult male described in baboons ( Papio spp.). These relationships were characterized by high rates of proximity and affiliative social behavior (though typically not sexual in nature) and were generally argued to confer benefits to females in the form of protection from harassment or aggression, and to males in the form of paternal investment or future mating opportunities. Use of the term “friendship” has recently been extended to characterize strong social bonds between individuals generally in many species, including non‐primates, which may be based upon a variety of psychosocial mechanisms. A growing body of empirical evidence (primarily from apes and cercopithecines at present) suggests that social bonding in and of itself confers fitness benefits to individuals." @default.
