- W4242808406 abstract "In the mid-1990s, an aggressive effort was initiated to improve the general manner in which coronary artery bypass surgery was conducted. This change was centered around two different schools of thought. One said that the surgery should continue to be performed on the arrested heart using cardiopulmonary bypass but through small incisions that avoided the standard median sternotomy, the so-called minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass or “MID-CAB.” The other school rather ignored the size of the incision and focused on performing the surgery without the use of cardiopulmonary bypass, the so-called off-pump coronary artery bypass, or “OP-CAB.” It seems that at least numerically, the OP-CAB procedure has become the more important approach, with approximately 25% of all coronary artery bypass procedures in the United States now being performed in this manner. No one surgeon is more closely associated with OP-CAB surgery than our Guest Editor, Dr. Michael Mack of Dallas, Texas. Dr. Mack has assimilated a group of his peers in this still emerging field who discuss adoption issues, evolving techniques, complications, results, new technologies, and anesthesia considerations relating to OP-CAB procedures." @default.
