- W4242933868 abstract "In the cost analysis of the conservative approach and surgical treatment of urethral prolapse, in addition to the visits to the hospital, the cost incurred by the loss of working hours or days by the patient's parents should also be taken into account. Using the conservative method, it can take several days or weeks for the prolapsed mucosa to slough away and heal. During this period, the patient will experience bleeding and discomfort, causing anxiety to the patient and her parents. This can result in several visits to the emergency room or doctor's office, again adding to the cost. During this period, the patient might have to be absent from school and the parents might have to be absent from work to stay home with their daughter. When the total cost of all these items are summed, the conservative approach will definitely cost more than that of surgical treatment. Diagnosis and Treatment of Urethral Prolapse in Children: Experience With 34 CasesUrologyVol. 73Issue 5PreviewTo retrospectively review 34 cases of urethral prolapse at an inner-city institution with an emphasis on diagnosis and treatment in the pediatric population. Full-Text PDF Editorial CommentUrologyVol. 73Issue 5PreviewUrethral prolapse represents a disease process that is poorly understood for which the treatment options include a medical and/or surgical approach. This report confirms that upfront surgical intervention is a viable treatment option. In this large series that spans 3 decades, almost all patients were treated surgically. The main rationale is that when the immediate problem is addressed, little need will exist for additional follow-up or secondary intervention. The symptoms that typically can persist for weeks when treated with estrogen cream are not an issue with this approach. Full-Text PDF" @default.
