- W4243100669 abstract "The early diagnosis of carcinoma of the pancreas is a difficult problem. The diagnostic procedures available today are based on the fact that the neoplasm, because of its size, produces indirect signs in the neighboring regions or viscera, such as the stomach or duodenum. Photoscanning with radioactive selenium (75Se) by means of selenomethione Se 75 has been used in the last four years to improve the diagnostic accuracy in regard to pancreatic disease. The selection of that radioactive substance is based on the following rationale. Physiologically, amino acids are the substratum for the pancreatic synthesis of digestive enzymes. The amino acid methionine contains sulfur in its molecule. Selenium, being similar to sulfur, can replace it in the methionine molecule without appreciably changing the properties of the amino acid. This substitution of selenium for sulfur has made selenomethionine Se 75 the preferred substance for pancreatic scanning. Blau et al1" @default.
