- W4243142010 abstract "This book concludes by reflecting on the trajectories of navalism in Germany and the United States after World War I. In his polemic The Navy: Defense or Portent? (1932), Charles Beard offered a scathing critique of the so-called naval expert. Beard traced the rise of this “new creature of modern civilization” back to the making of navalism in the United States and Imperial Germany before World War I. This book agrees with Beard's assertion that “naval experts” in uniform are key players in processes of global militarization. It considers how German and American naval elites devising their brand of militarism through a relentless pursuit of maritime force essential to the future of their industrial nation-states in twentieth-century global politics and economics. It shows that both navies continued to move along different paths while remaining committed to their navalist projects in the post-World War I era." @default.
