- W4243200795 abstract "The management of dairy bulls resident in artificial insemination centers (AICs) has changed during the last five decades. Numerous AICs used to house fewer than a hundred bulls more than fifty years ago, however, most dairy bulls reside in a few commercial AICs housing over a thousand bulls today. Initially, AICs collected semen from bulls, cooled it, distributed it domestically, and it would be used for breeding through artificial insemination (AI) within 3 days of its collection. When technology enabled the successful cryopreservation of bull semen, the international exchange of semen became commonplace. Subsequently, the need arose to document that the health status of semen donor bulls and the AIC herd complied with an array of international regulations. Accordingly, extensive herd health programs were developed to meet export requirements and maintain the biosecurity of the AIC. Further development of technologies like in vitro fertilization, embryo transfer, and genomic evaluations have helped progress the genetic potential of dairy bulls housed in AIC. As such, these advancements have created new challenges for managing bulls in an AIC. This article will present information on several aspects of a complete bull management program including nutrition, bull and herd health programs, evaluation of bulls for general and reproductive health, and semen collection management." @default.
