Using the outraged voice of Jeremiah's confessions in the persona of Zedekiah he rails against God for the impossible situation God dealt him. The poet breaks off his argument to bemoan “the nightmarish picture, the horrific sight” of his slaughtered “cherished babes” that he still “sees” with burning vividness in his soul. When he resumes his case against God, his argument reflects the values and reasoning of modernity, challenging the hopelessly idealistic idea of a nation ruled by both God and king." @default.
