- W4243371848 abstract "Hydrofluoric acid is the common etchant used in case of soda glasses. But an ‘etch product payer’ formed during etching with HF greatly reduces the etching efficiency. Mechanical methods such as interruption, stirring and brushing etc. used earlier to remove this layer were highly cumbersome. In the present investigations, we have devised a chemical method of removing this layer. This has resulted in the development of a new etchant for soda glass detectors. When HF (48%) is mixed with H2SO4 (98%) in the ratio 1:2 by volume, etching is found to be absolutely free from the adverse effect of ‘etch product layer’. But no tracks are developed in this mixture. This may be on account of annealing of radiation damage prior to etching. Addition of suitable amount of water in the mixture, however, results in the development of tracks. Best track development properties with almost no effect of etch product layer are seen when the etchant consists of HF (48%), H2SO4 (98%) and H2O mixed in the ratio 1:2:10, by volume. With the use of the new etchant, the etching efficiency of soda glass nuclear track detectors increases from 42% to 63%. This etchant moderates the etching rates to such an extent that the scope of erros in their measurements decreases. The largest observable diameter with the use of this etchant is around 100 microns as against 40 microns maximum observable diameter when HF is used as the etchant. The diameter distributions corresponding to high and low energy fission fragment groups of 252Cf have been plottes. The diameter separation of two peaks corresponding to light and heavy fission fragments with the use of new etchant is 8.3 microns as against 3.5 microns separation when HF is used as the etchant. These results establish the superiority of the new etchant over HF." @default.
