- W4243521694 abstract "‘On a journey, you need to know where you have come from and where you are going’ As I take over the Editorship of the Health Information and Libraries Journal, the above homily is at the forefront of my thoughts. I have been involved as a reader, author and guest editor with Health Information and Libraries Journal and its predecessor (Health Libraries Review) since publication started. This length of involvement enables me to be aware of both the people who have been behind the journal and the people who use it in their professional life. When Dr Judy Palmer wrote her first editorial1 she referred to being fortunate and unfortunate in succeeding Shane Godbolt as editor. I will therefore claim to be doubly fortunate and unfortunate in following Shane and now Judy. The fortune lies in becoming editor for a journal where successive issues have consistently provided evidence on my predecessors’ high quality contributions. Judy has built on Shane's work2 and developed processes, quality controls and ideas that ensure the journal is in a position of strength. Judy's vision and application have significantly moved Health Information and Libraries Journal forward. The doubly unfortunate challenge I have been set by Judy, Shane and other contributors is to maintain the high standards that they have continually achieved. A recent survey of members of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals’3 Health Libraries Group (HLG) provides valuable data on readers and prospective readers of Health Information and Libraries Journal. The survey involved sending out 2100 questionnaires to individual members. A total of 405 completed questionnaires were returned where questions were answered about their awareness of the journal, whether they read the journal and their perceptions of its quality. What emerges from the findings is that 91% were aware of the journal and 64% read it sometimes. In terms of quality, 79% of members rated it 4/5 on a scale of 1–5, where 1 is poor and 5 is excellent. So, in terms of knowing where Health Information and Libraries Journal has come from, the evidence would point to a good quality title with a history and pedigree that is valued by its readership. Predicting where the journal will go over the next few years is not so straightforward. The journal has to reflect the health information and library sector where much is changing: roles, organizational structures, user behaviour, technology, skills and working patterns. With the potential of electronic journals beginning to be unleashed, Health Information and Libraries Journal will have to consider how it best utilizes this technology. My aim as the new editor is to apply the principles that I think have underpinned the journal since its inception: To encourage new and existing academic and practitioner authors from across the world to contribute informed and quality journal articles. To ensure that the journal reflects the key issues and developments facing those involved in delivering health information and library services. To manage the journal effectively and efficiently. To contribute towards the health information and library knowledge base so that practitioners can make informed decisions. The excellent contributions to this issue provide in-depth perspectives on some key issues currently being faced. Patterns in usage between printed and online periodical titles and what that means for future planning are examined. Developments such as clinical governance, knowledge management, problem based learning are explored. The series ‘Innovations online’ has been replaced by a column covering ‘Learning and Teaching’. It has become apparent that much of the material published in Health Information and Libraries Journal details innovative use of information and communication technologies. Having a series on this area is no longer appropriate. Many thanks to Betsy Anagnostellis for her sterling work in managing this series. It is a pleasure to welcome Nicky Whitsed who will be responsible for the learning and teaching column. I am delighted to become the Health Information and Libraries Journal Editor and I look forward to the rest of the journey. Working with Penny Bonnett (Assistant Editor), Margaret Forrest (Associate Editor) and the rest of the editorial team will make the travel much easier." @default.
